This pair of antique Chinese stoneware soy sauce jugs dates from approximately 1850–1920 and was salvaged near Boston Bar, BC, along the old railway lines where Chinese migrant workers played a crucial role in completing the railroad. These pieces are significant early Chinese-Canadian artifacts, and beyond their history, they are exceptionally sculptural. Each jug features the classic dark brown Henan-style or salt glaze, with natural surface variations created during firing. Originally used to store and transport fermented staples such as soy sauce, vinegar, and preserved vegetables, these vessels helped Chinese immigrants maintain essential elements of their culinary culture abroad. Their simple, handmade, and slightly crude construction adds both character and authenticity, making them compelling objects from both a historical and aesthetic perspective.
