COSCO was founded in 1935 as the Columbus Specialty Company with the invention of a tin matchbox that dispensed new matches while providing a place for used ones. In 1941, the company began using the Cosco brand name, a contraction of COlumbus Specialty COmpany. As did most factories, Cosco made military equipment during World War II. After the war, Cosco introduced the first full line of all-metal household stools.
