This original Spanish Art Deco poster was created to promote the Exposición General Española, a major national exhibition held in Seville (1928) and Barcelona (1929). Designed by Rafael de Penagos, one of Spain’s most important Art Deco illustrators, the poster reflects the bold graphic clarity and symbolism of late-1920s European design.
Printed as an original stone lithograph on paper, it was intended for public display in prominent civic and urban spaces, projecting Spain’s cultural ambition and modern identity. The imagery—an allegorical figure of Spain, lion, laurel wreath, and heraldic elements—conveys strength, unity, and national pride through a restrained Art Deco palette.
Originally produced for a specific historical moment and never meant to survive beyond the exhibition, posters of this caliber are increasingly scarce. Today, this example stands as both a powerful graphic work and a significant artifact of early 20th-century European exhibition culture.
