A celebrated painter of satirical commentaries on contemporary English life, William Hogarth was primarily known in the eighteenth century through his prints. The most significant work produced in the artist's later years is the Election series, which consists of four paintings and the four prints he engraved after them. Together, Four Prints of an Election parodies the 1754 parliamentary elections for Oxfordshire, a Tory stronghold known in eighteenth-century English politics for the rampant levels of bribery practised by both conservative and liberal Tories.

The first print is called "Chairing the Members, Plate IV: Four Prints of an Election". The publishing date is January 1, 1758.

The second print is called "Canvassing for Votes, Plate II: Four Prints of an Election". The publishing date is February 20, 1757.
