Large 19th-century landscape oil painting by Daniel Charles Grose (1832–1900), signed “D.C. Grose” and dated 1873.

A particularly strong and atmospheric composition depicting a calm body of water bordered by a dramatic rocky, heavily wooded shoreline. Small figures in a boat appear on the water, providing scale against the imposing landscape, while distant hills fade into the background.

Grose was a British-born landscape painter who worked extensively in Canada and the United States during the 19th century. He is particularly known for expansive landscapes, river scenes and wilderness subjects. His Canadian work includes documented paintings of Quebec and the Laurentians.

The exact location depicted here has not been identified. The landscape is consistent with scenery found in Quebec and eastern Canada, although we would not attribute the location without further documentation.

Presented in an excellent old pine frame retaining its naturally aged surface, wear and character. The simplicity of the frame works particularly well with the painting and we have left it untouched.

A substantial and highly decorative example of Grose’s work, particularly appealing for its large scale, 1873 date, dramatic rocky shoreline and small boat figures.
