Large antique architectural fireplace mantel with integrated paneled overmantel, constructed in solid Douglas fir, circa 1910.

The mantel has a strong architectural presence, with broad paneled pilasters, recessed square details, a deep projecting shelf and dentil molding beneath. The fireplace opening is framed by substantial molded trim with a simple geometric central keystone detail.

Above the shelf is an unusually large paneled overmantel with a projecting molded cornice. Paneled returns on both the mantel and upper section give the piece considerable depth and indicate it was designed as a significant permanent architectural feature rather than a simple applied fireplace surround.

The fir has been stripped or otherwise taken back to a natural unfinished surface, exposing the grain and warm colour of the old-growth timber. Minor marks, nail holes and surface wear remain consistent with age and architectural salvage.

A particularly good piece for restoration of an early West Coast residence, or as a large-scale architectural feature in a contemporary interior.
