Description

An exceptional late 19th-century Gothic Revival architectural oil lantern, attributed to England and dating to approximately 1880–1900.

Constructed of metal, the lantern retains a wonderful old decorative painted finish with contrasting hand-painted details. Its architectural form features a steeply pitched and shaped roof, pierced Gothic trefoil motifs, tapered central spire and distinctive curled ornamentation at the crown.

Four large glass panels surround the interior, while the original-style removable circular oil reservoir and burner fit into the base of the lantern. The surviving oil-burning components add considerably to the character and completeness of the piece.

The design is strongly influenced by the English Gothic Revival movement of the Victorian period. It may originally have been intended for an entrance, vestibule, covered exterior location or institutional setting.

Particularly appealing is the untouched surface. The painted metal shows appropriate wear, losses, oxidation and variation accumulated through more than a century of use. We have intentionally left this finish intact.

A highly decorative and increasingly difficult-to-find example of late Victorian architectural lighting.  Found in a Montreal collection .the wick is removable and u could just place a nice 6 inch candle.
