Description

Substantial antique three-piece seating suite comprising a long sofa and pair of matching armchairs, dating to approximately 1890–1910.

The frames have a strong late Victorian/Edwardian character, with deeply carved floral and scrolling decoration across the front rails, carved cabriole-form front legs and sweeping upholstered arms. The exposed carved framework retains a dark aged finish with considerable surface character.

What makes the set particularly good is the old leather upholstery surrounding the sides and arms. It has developed a beautifully worn surface and remains largely intact, including the decorative leather edging, nail-head construction and remnants of the original fringe. I would absolutely leave that alone rather than restore it heavily.

The loose seat and back cushions have been upholstered in brown textiles/velvet at different points and show considerable age and wear. Upholstery is usable as found but could be replaced while retaining the aged leather portions of the suite.

An impressive, highly decorative suite with unusually good scale and presence.
