A strong mid-19th-century Ontario stepback cupboard from the Waterloo County area, circa 1850, displaying the Germanic influence associated with early furniture from this region.

Constructed primarily in walnut with beautifully figured tiger maple panels to the lower doors. The upper section features three glazed doors with divided panes, fluted vertical trim and a substantial molded cornice. Below are three drawers over two paneled cupboard doors, with shaped architectural details flanking the base.

The most important feature is the remarkably well-preserved original surface. The dark, warm finish has developed extensive fine age cracking and crazing throughout, particularly evident on the figured maple panels and surrounding walnut. This naturally aged surface gives the cupboard considerable depth and character and has not been stripped or refinished.

The shaped tiger maple panels, restrained moldings and overall construction reflect the Germanic furniture-making traditions found among 19th-century settlers in the Waterloo County region of Ontario.

A substantial and very decorative example of early Canadian country furniture with an unusually appealing untouched surface.
