A wonderful early Canadian painted pine settle bench, circa 1900–1920, attributed to Saskatchewan.

Constructed in pine or similar softwood, the bench features a paneled back with a distinctive shaped and scalloped crest, open arms and a broad plank seat. The straightforward construction and restrained decorative treatment are characteristic of vernacular furniture made for everyday use in rural Western Canada.

The bench retains an exceptionally appealing old painted surface, now heavily worn through to the warm natural wood beneath. Areas of crackled paint, rubbing and uneven coloration have developed naturally through decades of use and give the piece tremendous character.

A particularly good piece of Canadian Prairie furniture with generous proportions at 67 inches wide. Ideal in an entry, mudroom, dining area or at a large farmhouse table.
