Description

Antique commercial pendant light dating to approximately 1920–1935. The fixture features a substantial bell-form opal glass shade with finely molded vertical ribbing designed to diffuse the light while producing a distinctive prismatic surface.

The shade is held by an original-style metal fitter with three brass retaining screws. Above is a tall ventilated metal socket housing with ribbed detailing around the crown, giving the fixture a particularly strong early industrial appearance.

Originally intended for commercial or institutional interiors, this type of pendant would have been appropriate in factories, schools, offices, banks, workshops and other large public buildings.

The combination of the softly illuminated ribbed glass and dark aged metalwork makes this an excellent example of early 20th-century architectural lighting.
