Antique architectural fireplace mantel crafted from old-growth Douglas fir, salvaged from an early Vancouver, British Columbia residence dating to approximately 1920.

The mantel has a strong Classical Revival influence with an unusually decorative arrangement of carved and turned architectural details. The wide upper frieze incorporates repeating carved fan and bead decoration, while the substantial side supports feature turned and reeded columns, carved capitals and moulded bases.

Constructed in solid fir with the tight grain characteristic of early Pacific Northwest timber. The surface has been stripped back, revealing the warm natural colour and pronounced grain of the old-growth wood.

The close-up photographs show the hand-worked character, age, wear and construction of the lower column sections. Minor losses, old nail holes, edge wear and irregularities remain and are consistent with its age and history as an architectural element.

A particularly good example of early Vancouver residential architectural salvage, suitable for installation as a functioning fireplace surround or as an architectural feature.
