Originally a toymaking facility in Stockholm, Gemla Möbler set its sights on bentwood furniture at the turn of the 19th century, as three families of craftsmen from Bohemia immigrated to the small village to further develop the delicate production process. "That’s when the whole business took off," says Benny Hermansson, Gemla Möbler's current owner and CEO. "In 1890, we had a shift in competence from Central Europe to southern Sweden for bentwood production, prompting Gemla to begin making hockey sticks, cinema chairs, and other design items in a rounded shape.”
